Edited 4 years agoI have now spent enough time with this one to weigh in with an opinion. I was out early behind Paraffin, and expressed my enthusiasm for why I believe it should be regarded as Exhibit A in making the case for Armand Hammer as the most musically progressive and relevant hip hop act going.
I didn’t love this one from the jump the way I connected with Paraffin. But, my favorite moments on this record (spider hole, War Stories, Flavor Flav) are every bit as good as the best in their already impressive archive and that includes their flooring “crawlspace” collaboration on the Woods/Segal Hiding Places, probably my favorite cut of all of their output.
My copy of the Shrines pressing is fine. I hope they re-release it later packaged with instrumental edits, as they did with Hiding Places. I think these guys should be ed and I hope they continue to act prolifically. This is top class hip hop. -
Paraffin edges this one out imo, but that's reeeally hard to top to begin with. Overall just more great hip-hop from the duo, lyrics and beats on point as always, pressing sounds great. Scalpers really gotta ruin it for everyone tho.
